An Introduction to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

Karl Eklund, Ph.D.

[Dr. Eklund addressing SRPEDD]

Introduction

In the winter of 1993-4 Sally and I visited St. Vincent for the first time. It was not our first visit to the caribbean: we had been coming down every winter after we discovered that the warmth and sunlight helped us get through the New England winters more easily. But we had not visited St. Vincent because the marketing materials seemed to be directed at people who owned or rented yachts; and that signaled a different ambiance than we were comfortable in. But Sally pointed out that they also had one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world, so we tried it out. We returned the following winter and in the spring of 1995 we bought a house. It needed some rehabilitation, but we spent the winter of 1995-6 there and have returned every year since.

In 1996 I wrote a few paragraphs for a Travel Bulletin Board I subscribed to, and that was picked up by a travel site on the web. For a couple of years it was about the only reference to St. Vincent on the web. I put up some more text and some pictures on a free page on Geocities and later moved that to Angelfire. That site still exists and will remain there until this site is completed to my satisfaction.

Googol will tell you that there are now about 100,000 sites that mention St. Vincent and the Grenadines, but you will find that this site is different from the others. There is, however, one way in which it is similar. It has information that will be useful for or interesting to the potential visitor to St. Vincent. You can go where that information is by clicking on the bar below this paragraph.
